How we rank shortest commute

Commute time is the mean travel time to work, in minutes, across transportation modes, for residents who travel to work.

People who work from home are not included, so a ZIP with many remote workers can still show a long average commute for those who travel.

Short commutes usually mean jobs nearby, but rural ZIPs with a local employer can rank high too. Open a ZIP's profile to see its share of 60-minute commutes and transit use.

Only ZIPs with at least 1,000 residents are ranked, so a handful of households cannot top the list. 22,760 U.S. ZIPs qualify.
